Introducing the Vote It Forward Fest: Art & Civic Engagement

“The future of this country is in the hands of the young people” – Nas

Welcome to the Vote It Forward Festival! The election is upon us, and as we get closer to the voter registration deadline, we wanted to take a look back in time, giving a brief history on the voting movements that have come before us. Understanding the power of media and it’s influence on the political landscape, the Vote it Forward Film Festival would like to assist in getting your voices heard. Through the facilitation of this artful contest, we get to offer you, the people, an opportunity to speak out for what it is that you believe in, while sharing these experiences with the world.

So who has leveraged media before us to urge the people to speak out? Let’s take a look…

Vote on November 6, 2012

This four letter word, small in size, is the inalienable right to have your raised hand counted. That liberty is being comprised. We live in a time where that freedom is being suppressed, bullied and, unfortunately, neglected. Dialogue fosters change. It allows us to see the commonalities in each other and offers a platform to express ideas. With November right around the corner, awareness of the issues and the bylaws surrounding voter rights effect the outcome of Election Day 2012. Party affiliation aside, everyone has the right to vote. Your presence must be accounted for and the sound of your voice must be heard.

Where can I vote?
What should I bring to vote?
What if I’m out of state?
Who can I vote for?

About the Festival

The VIFF is an on-line film festival dedicated to you–the dreamer, the comedic genius (and most of all) the American. We believe that your stories of using your right vote and raising awareness of the barriers used to deny that right will help enlighten others to do the same. Have an idea for a political satire that too funny to keep in the vault? Is there an elderly couple in your neighborhood who have wisdom to impart of why they’ve voted all these years? Do you have a testimonial of casting your first vote as a first-generation citizen in 2008? Shoot it, edit it and send it to us. And for all you spoken word artists who have a poem you want to give to the masses, our mic is open to you.

Your videos of everyday heroism, unscripted candor and viral-ready hilarity add depth to the overall mosaic of this country. The time is now and we need you now, more than ever.
